A Man’s Prerogative (Part 2)
Anger
A man shouldn’t be a slave to anger. His anger should not be destructive. That anger can be likened to one of cowardice or one that tries to cover his feelings of inferiority. A man should own his anger. It should give him the strength and courage to be better but it should also heal him and heal others as well. A man that can’t control his anger has no power at all. Nobody takes him seriously; not other men and certainly not women.
Vulnerability
Some people think that strength means being closed off to your emotions and concealing your weaknesses but it is in fact, cowardice. A man should not be afraid to reveal himself in any situation no matter how uncomfortable it might be. He must want to be vulnerable… it speaks of his courage.
Defense
A man must be able to defend himself and the people around him. Therefore, he must know basic defense techniques whether by working out constantly or learning how to fight or strength training etc. He must be aware of his ability to defend himself in the face of emergencies so he does not panic and he is not easily provoked. He works on building his strength.
Honesty
A man must be honest about/in every aspect of his life. He doesn’t need to pretend to be more than what he is not or to know more than what he does. He knows what he needs to do and he gets it done… no questions asked and without lies or deceit.
Humor
A man is able to balance hard work and fun, importance and unimportance, business and leisure. He should not be too serious all the time neither should he be too playful as well. There’s a simplicity to him amidst all the responsibilities that he takes up and he is able to joke about his flaws or failures because he needs not be defensive all the time. He can release a tense situation with humor anytime but he isn’t the one to make a joke to cover up his insecurities or escape intimacy or destroy intensity. He knows when to be serious and when to put on the cape of fun.
Development
A man understands the importance of developing himself – spirit, mind and body. Not because he needs to be better than others but for himself, for his personal achievement, for his aim to be the best he can be. Taking care of your spirit helps you maintain the deeper angle to every situation – you never lose your compassion towards others; Taking care of your mind keeps you clever, sharp and informed; Taking care of your body keeps you fit, healthy and strong.
Humility
A man should have no reason to be proud or arrogant. He does not need to put people down to make himself stand out. No matter how wealthy or successful he gets, he approaches every situation with the simplest of attitudes. He does not need to show himself or prove his worth all the time, it shows in his actions and in-actions as well.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I do not mean to imply that a man is perfect or should be perfect. Not at all. I have stated what should be considered the rights and privilege of every man. Ergo, what every man should aspire to. Falling short and making mistakes… That’s also part of being a man.
